Quito, aka San Francisco de Quito, is the capital of Ecuador and lies at a healthy altitude. Quito the second-highest administrative capital city in the world (after La Paz, Bolivia). Ecuador’s capital, Quito, was founded on the ruins of the Inca city and remains the least-altered historic center in Latin America.
Quito is located in the northern highlands of Ecuador in the Guayllabamba river basin. The city has been built on a long plateau lying on the east flanks of the Pichincha volcano. From Quito you can see the volcano on a clear day.
Quito is heavily visited, as it is rich in history and known the world over. It is an excellent place to start your Ecuador travel. The Quito airport is being moved to a lower altitude and will be open sometime this year. The airport currently open has been remodeled recently but due to the altitude cannot handle the air traffic that they would like. The new airport will really open up the tourist trade, as many people are discovering all that Ecuador has to offer.
