Guayaquil, aka Santiago de Guayaquil, is the largest and the most populous city in Ecuador. It’s metro area population exceeds 3.3 million (as of 2009). It is Ecuador’s main port, making it the center of fishing and manufacturing.
The city is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Guayas and the seat of the namesake canton. Guayaquil is located on the western bank of the Guayas River, which flows into the Pacific Ocean at the Gulf of Guayaquil. This city is full of flavor and many have come back home telling the tale.
